I wish to study Physiotherapy because I want a career that will allow me to
improve the life quality of others. Physiotherapy incorporates science
and sports - both of which are areas that I'm particularly interested
in. I have played different sports in the past and therefore
understand the importance of a fast and lasting recovery after an
injury and the need to prevent these injuries from happening. I have
also gained work experience to give me an insight into the world of a
physiotherapist to ensure I am making the right decision. For my
Leaving Certificate I am studying Biology, Chemistry, Home Economics,
German, and English at Higher Level, Maths at Ordinary Level and the
Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme(LCVP. I am also taking
Higher Level Spanish for my Leaving Certificate as an extra subject.
Studying Biology at Higher Level is providing me with a good
understanding of the human body and what affects its health. LCVP
focuses on personal development and I am improving my team-work
skills as well as my ability to take responsibility for my own
learning. I believe that I will benefit from my subject choices,
especially Biology and LCVP, when I am studying at 3rd level. In 2013
I used my summer holidays to gain experience in physiotherapy and did
two weeks of work placement in two different settings. The first week
I spent at the Harlekin Health Centre in Bremen, Germany, which
offers physiotherapy, health promotion and fitness training. Their
goal is to help people regain their strength and mobility after an
injury or illness and to take preventive measures where possible.
During my time at the health centre I had the opportunity to oversee
different treatments which allowed me to gain an insight into the
variety of patients a physiotherapist has to care for. These included
treatment for a cancer patient who had to regain his strength and
sense of balance, a soccer player with periostitis and two patients
who have had ACL reconstruction. The latter was particularly
interesting as both patients had the surgery around the same time but
there was a noticeable difference in the flexibility of the knee of
each patient, which showed the influence that the patients themselves
have on the healing process. My second work experience was at the
Medi-Fit Physiotherapy Clinic in Lower Saxony, Germany. They offer a
wide range of health related services, including physiotherapy,
sports rehab and nutrition counselling. Again, I was able to gain a
valuable insight into all of those departments. I took part in some
of the sports rehab classes and by the end of the week I was allowed
to demonstrate some of the exercises, while my colleagues explained
to course participants the effect they have on the body. I love
working with people and find that my experience of working with
customers in my waitressing job and as a team supervisor at the 2011
German Cheerleading Championships has developed my ability to
communicate effectively to achieve understanding and provide good
service. Both experiences have also helped me to improve my
organisational skills and my ability to perform well under pressure.
I also speak English and German fluently and have basic knowledge in
Spanish, Greek and Italian, which will enable me to work with a
diverse client base, and will also give me the opportunity to travel
and learn new skills all over the world. I have had training in first
aid and caring for children of all ages and abilities. In 2011 I
moved from Germany to Ireland to work as an au pair for the duration
of 1 year. Being responsible for the well-being of two little boys
for most of the day has made me more independent and I learned to
adjust to new and unexpected situations. When my year as au pair was
over, I decided to stay in Ireland and do my Leaving Certificate in
an English-speaking country. This experience makes me confident to
say that I will adapt to life in the UK easily and be able to
concentrate fully on my studies.
